The Writing Lounge-
Striving for Excellence

Welcome to St. Paul's 7th and 8th grade English writing program. This website provides an overview of what we do in both grades. One key of our program is that excellent writing is reinforced in all subjects. As teachers we all collaborate very closely to help each student excel at writing.

One main focus of the program is to write for a broader audience than just us, the teachers. Instead, students will participate in multiple essay contests and write for a local newspaper, Visalia Times-Delta.

Check out our past winners and publications. In 2020, we had a National Winner! Read about her success below.

Essay Contests

Students are much more motivated to write when they write for a broader audience than just for their teacher. Even better, when they can win money and add their placement to their CV for high school and college. You could be the next winner! Learn more about each contest.

SPS Contest Winners

St. Paul's students have been highly successful in placing 1st through 3rd at the local, regional, and national level.

Publications

7th and 8th grade students have the opportunity to write for a local newspaper. They gain the valuable experience of being junior journalists.

What do alumni have to say?

Wumni Omolulu, 11th Grade
San Joaquin Memorial High School

“Mrs. Maryanow’s English class at St. Paul’s has done wonders for me and my writing skills. I came out of her class feeling prepared to take on high school English classes at San Joaquin Memorial. Her emphasis on details that go into writing an effective essay such as writing a thesis statement and correctly formatting a paper has made me stand out in my English classes, as my teachers were very impressed that I knew such details as a freshman in high school. Some of my peers had yet to know these fundamental basics that go into writing an essay, and it is truly Mrs. Maryanow’s teaching that made me excel in all my English classes, reflective in that I received the honors English award for both my Freshman and Sophomore years in high school. I am so glad that I got to take her class during my time at St. Paul’s School and I will never forget what she has taught me.”
